The Gazette mes amis...

Impact's Zé gets it done with five goals off headers
Team can use Brazilian's prowess tonight when squad takes on Raging Rhinos in Can-Am Cup soccer final
PAT HICKEY
The Gazette
Wednesday, July 30, 2003
Zé Roberto believes in using his head.
The result is that the Brazilian midfielder has scored five goals for the Impact - all on headers - as the team has grabbed first place in the A-League's Northeast Division while posting the best overall record in the league.
The Impact will need Zé's offensive skills tonight when it takes a break from league action. The squad will face a familiar rival when it tackles the second-place Rochester Raging Rhinos in the Can-Am Cup final.
Even the most rabid Impact fans can be excused for not knowing that the home team is the defending champion in the competition between the four Northeast Division teams - Montreal, Rochester, Syracuse and Toronto. That's because the last time the Cup was up for grabs was 1998 when Montreal beat Rochester 3-1.
"It's only an exhibition, but any time we play Rochester, it's an important game," said Mauro Biello, who scored a goal in that 1998 game.
"We know we'll be playing them in the playoffs and we don't want to give them any edge."
Impact coach Bob Lilley, whose team has won two of three games against the Rhinos this season, has had to tinker with his lineup since leading scorer Eddie Sebrango was sidelined with a knee injury.
Sebrango has made progress in his rehabilitation, but is still at least a week away from rejoining the team.
Zé picked up some of the slack with his fifth header goal as the Impact won in Atlanta Saturday night.
"I've always been pretty good with my head," said Zé, who is one of the shortest players in the league at 5-foot-7. "I don't think size is as important as getting good position.
"As soon as the ball is kicked (on a corner kick), I have a pretty good idea of where it's going to be and I try to fight for position.
"I'm not worried about physical play," he added. "There are guys who talk to me, try to intimidate me, but I enjoy playing physical."
Biello said Sebrango's injury has forced all the players to work harder, and it also has forced Lilley to make some personnel changes. Gabriel Gervais, who has played defence since joining the Impact, was moved to striker in Atlanta and will probably start in that position tonight.
The Impact returns to A-League action Saturday when it heads out on the road to play the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
