Canada kicks off the Hyundai Men’s U-20 Tour

The Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) officially kicked off the 2007 Hyundai Men’s U-20 Tour presented by Yahoo! Canada at a press conference in Toronto today.

CSA president Colin Linford, acting Chief Operating Officer John Billingsley, and Canada Soccer Properties Managing Director Chris Collie welcomed Hyundai Auto Canada and Yahoo! Canada to the team.

“These are truly exciting times for soccer in Canada,” says Linford. “Hyundai Auto Canada and Yahoo! Canada will be integral players on the Canadian team. Believe me, you don’t win games or develop elite players without the support of sponsors like Hyundai Auto Canada and Yahoo! Canada.”

The Hyundai men’s U-20 national team presented by Yahoo! Canada kick off their tour in Burnaby this Saturday 24 March against Scotland at Swangard Stadium. Their second game is Tuesday 27 March in Victoria at Royal Athletic Park, also against Scotland. Game three, which was formally announced today, pits Canada against five-time world youth champions Argentina at the National Soccer Stadium in Toronto on 11 May. Future games in Ottawa, Sherbrooke and Edmonton will be announced in the coming month.

“These are two great new partners for the Canadian Soccer Association and the Canadian soccer community,” says Collie. “Hyundai Auto Canada and Yahoo! Canada will provide tremendous support to soccer in Canada, from the local level right through to our national teams.”

The Hyundai men’s U-20 national team presented by Yahoo! Canada are currently training in British Columbia for their two-game international series with Scotland. They are training for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 which runs 30 June to 22 July in six cities across the country: Victoria, Burnaby, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal. Canada could have as many as six returning players this year from the last world youth tournament (Nederland 2005), five of which are at camp for the Scotland series: defender David Edgar, midfielders Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault and Jaime Peters, and forwards Will Johnson and Andrea Lombardo. Only goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, a last-minute scratch because of injury, did not make the trip out west.

Canada 2007 will be the 16th FIFA U-20 World Cup (formerly called FIFA World Youth Championships). Canada is heading to the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the fourth-straight time and the eighth time overall. Led by coach Dale Mitchell, Canada had their best performance at United Arab Emirates 2003 when they reached the quarter final. Canada’s youth alumni includes Hall of Fame members Mitchell, Ian Bridge, Alex Bunbury, Craig Forrest, Gerry Gray, Colin Miller, Domenic Mobilio, Brian Robinson, Randy Samuel, Branko Segota and Mike Sweeney. More recently, some of Canada’s youth stars have been Dwayne De Rosario, Paul Stalteri, Atiba Hutchinson and Iain Hume.
